lama-Tawang-

In 1959, His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama fled from Tibet to India through Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.   Arunachal Pradesh or the land of “Dawn lit Mountains” rises from the Assam plains as a mass of densely forested, and impossibly steep, hills, which eventually top off as snow-capped peaks along the Tibetan border. It is one of India’s last unspoilt wildernesses. Home to 26 indigenous tribes, Arunachal is a sanctuary for India’s natural and anthropological heritage. A staggering five hundred species of orchid –found in its glacial terrain, alpine meadows and subtropical rainforest are a visual delight. It is also home to the oldest and the second largest Monastery in Asia region and also the birth place of the 6th Dalai Lama.

I have sprinkled a little bit of wildlife from Assam for some action after a calm and peaceful sojourn with nature.

Uttaranchal or Devbhoomi (Abode of Gods) has been the destination of sages and intellectuals seeking spiritual attainment, from time immemorial. Holy shrines, mountains, glaciers, rivers, meadows and colourful valleys have always been visited and admired alike by thousands of pilgrims, trekkers, philosophers, poets and artists. I had travelled to this region with my parents who are senior citizens and ours is an amazingly heterogeneous combination…one very religious, one indifferent to religion but keen on history and culture and another avid trekker trying to build appreciation for history and culture. It is a different kind of experience travelling with non-like-minded people but then diversity brings out the best in everyone.

As we wandered in the Abode of Gods, along the snow clad mountains, glaciers, river banks and Deodar jungles we discovered ourselves and learnt to appreciate each other’s interest. After all to reach every shrine there is a trek, and every trek ends with a shrine and all of this with big doses of history and mythology. But the biggest draw to these mountains is the unmatched tranquility which is has gone missing from our lives. Come Beyonder and spend a few days in the Lap of Himalayas

I have visited this place at least 20 times, thanks to my job which took me to every nook and corner of Himachal and offered me a lot of opportunity to interact with locals. And every time I was left craving for more. The name meaning home of snow or land of snow, is blessed with mountain peaks, hot springs and many other natural riches. Interlocking mountain chains makes Himachal a spectacular place simply to explore. Every pass crossing into a new valley is a new surprise, with its own customs, gods and even language. You can meet the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala in his home away from home, or get stunned by the preserved Tibetan customs at Spiti. The culinary ranging from Thukpas and momos to the traditional Himachali cuisine is a foodie’s delight. While I was fortunate to get an immersive feel of this place, I have tried to create a shorter module for travellers who are hard pressed with time.
