Botswana

Why visit Botswana?

Botswana Map Outline

A landlocked paradise, Botswana is a veritable haven for the wildlife of Africa and is the last home for many endangered bird and mammal species. If it is a pure, close up with nature wildlife experience that you yearn for – Botswana is the place to go in Africa.

Botswana has different ecosystems to offer you unique and varied experiences – The world’s largest intact inland Delta and a UNESCO World Heritage site – the Okavango Delta – the Jewel of the Kalahari, where an arid desert transforms into a flooded paradise of life after the rains; the vast, arid (Land of the Thirsty) and unending landscapes of the Kalahari; the isolated and lonely horizons of the Makgadikgadi Salt pans; the floodplains, marshlands, open savannahs of the Chobe National reserve with an amazing density of wildlife.

Experience the stunning beauty of this region on Mokoros (canoes) on the Okavango, river cruises on the Chobe, guided game drives, walking safaris, horseback or elephant back safaris, camping safaris, flying safaris – you are spoilt for choice on how you can experience the legendary wildlife of this earthly paradise.

Botswana also has a number of other rare species which can be seen on safari including the black-maned Kalahari lion, sitatunga, puku and red lechwe antelope, brown hyena, the African skimmer and aardvark.

Botswana is committed to the conservation of environment, wildlife and cultural heritage and is a leader in eco-tourism. Over 38% of the land is protected for wildlife and nature conservation. As a traveller one can assist with these conservation programs, earning some Karma points along with a great vacation.

The local guides are very knowledgeable and many having spent most of their life in the jungle are in tune with nature and the environment.

From desert to delta there are few countries that offer such natural diversity as Botswana – home to the vast moon-like environment of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, the largest game reserve in the world (the Central Kalahari), and one of the largest inland Delta’s in the world.

Best time to visit Botswana is during the green season from November through to March . Migratory birds and baby antelope are best seen during this time. May to August can be extremely chilly, but is a good time to visit  Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park as the wildlife is out in abundance.

Best places to visit in Botswana?

The Okavango Delta –a place where wild creatures roam and rule, where big cats and much bigger elephants walk free in one of the world’s last great wildernesses. The delta is a byword for abundance – for animal numbers, for the variety of species, for the birdlife, for floods of Biblical proportions. And it is also a place of singular and unparalleled beauty where safari possibilities can seem as endless as the waters themselves.

The Kalahari Desert is not an ordinary desert, it receives a lot of rainfall annually. The Kalahari sand dunes, some of which stretch west to the Namib Desert, compose the largest continuous expanse of sand on earth. These dunes are covered with a relative abundance of vegetation. With fossil river valleys, golden grasses, black-maned lions and the echoes of the local tribes, Kalahari can be called as one of the most beautiful deserts on Earth.

Makgadikgadi Pans: The largest salt pans in the world, located in the middle of the dry savanna, it is the remains of a huge lake which dried up thousands of years ago.

Nxai Pan national park: Characterised by sand dunes, vast salt pans, the famous Baines baobab trees this park offers a good opportunity to see birds and wildlife.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park: It is known for its red sand dunes and dry riverbeds. It straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana and is an excellent place for wildlife watching.

Kubu Island: It is a dry granite rock island engulfed by a white sea of salt in the Makgadikgadi Pan. Today the island is protected as a national monument, and the proceeds earned from the entry fee go towards helping the local community.

Chobe River: It’s a place abundant with wildlife and the best time to visit is during the dry season (April to October) when game concentrations are at their highest. A good place to meet hippos, buffalo, cheetahs crocodiles, antelope species and huge herds of elephants. It can be combined easily with the Okavango Delta and Kalahari desert.

Moremi wildlife reserve: this game reserve lies in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The reserve has one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in Africa and includes endangered wild dogs, herds of elephants and the ‘Big Five.’

What our Travellers Say

Radhika & AmitBeyonder Traveller - Africa - Kenya & Tanzania

As our fantastic guide Elijah put it, Kenya gave us a taste of the “Real Africa”. And what a taste it was. It has taken me almost a month after our trip to truly put our experience into words.
Beyonder went beyond and more- Srini, and Anand – to you a big thanks!

”More(+)”

We experienced safari game drives, the Masai and the Samburu reserves, the Big 5, the beautiful sunsets and vastness of the savannas in a spectacular beauty that we can only attribute to the uniqueness of Kenya.
The glorious beauty of the mountains at a distance and the sun rising and setting in the horizon with the silhouette of the giraffes is an image that has stayed with me.
The lovely hotels, and service, and the fresh vegetables and food at the resorts were all superb.
We planned a trip through Beyonder on the recommendation of a friend, and I have to say it was the best decision we made. From when we landed at Nairobi, through traveling to the different reserves and lodges, the game drives, and experiencing the country, the arrangements were flawless. The itinerary, the choice of hotels and lodges, the attention to detail and the host of little insights and advice that come from an intimate knowledge of the country and empathy for the traveler – all that combined to give us easily the best holiday experience we’ve had so far. Right at the end, when our flight back home was cancelled because of a technical flaw and we found ourselves with an extra day in Nairobi, Srini and co. went above and beyonder(!) to make sure we had a great experience, and we were able to put our unexpected extra day to good use. I would unhesitatingly recommend Beyonder to anyone looking for an away from the ordinary

You handheld us right from the initial itinerary planning and air ticket bookings. Your expert advice was surely valued and this made sure that our trip started in the right way. The accommodations as well as the tour partner at Kenya were great and quite up to our expectations.

This was probably one of the best tours we had done together as a family. Africa’s wilderness makes you realize why animals should be free rather than in a zoo. The energy and vitality shown by the free animals is seldom seen by zoo animals, and hence makes this an unforgettable experience. This is the Lion King and National Geographic documentaries all rolled in one. The only thing missing is David Attenborough explaining about the animal albeit the tour guide arranged by you did quite a good job with his Attenborough style explanations on the numerous animals that we saw.
Africa’s wilderness should be a must visit place in everyone’s tourism bucket list, and Beyonder is doing a damn good job in making it happen.
