Kashmir-the paradise on earth
Kashmir, romancing the paradise
This couplet from Amir Khusrau says it all about Kashmir.
Agar firdaus bar roo-e zameen ast,
Hameen ast-o hameen ast-o hameen ast
If there is a paradise on earth,
It is this, it is this, it is this”
So what does a paradise look like ? Meadows, valleys, mountain peaks, lakes and flower gardens ! Did you know that Asia’s largest Tulip garden is in Kashmir? If this is the backdrop, love and romance will always be in the air.
Let’s take a look at what makes Kashmir a romantic destination…
Postcard landscape
The natural wonders are everywhere. From lakes, to river streams, to trees covered with snow flakes (during season), it almost looks like a picture out of some fairly tale. Kashmir is a popular shooting for Bollywood and other Indian regional cinema.
Shalimar (abode of love) & Nishat Gardens
These Gardens by the lake were created by Mughal Emperor Jehangir. Shalimar garden has rows of water fountains, and Chinar trees and it appears to be surrounded by the mountain range. Nishat garden is colourful with various different types of flowers. Along the flower beds, the trees, water fountains, terraces add to the beauty.
The magic of Gulmarg
The view from the Gulmarg ridges is something you don’t want to miss. The foothills appear to be merging with rice fields and a bunch of walnut , pear and mulberry trees. If it is a bright day, the Nanga Parbat peak will be shinning.
Gulmarg Gondola is the world’s second highest operational cable car and it takes you up to a height of 8500 feet. Once you reach the top you can try skiing if you are up for some adventure.
Pahalgam
Also known as the valley of Shepherds, Pahalgam is situated at the confluence of Lidder river and the Sheshnag lake. It is surrounded by thickly wooded pine forests, meadows and the snow-clad Himalayas. Did you that Pahalgam serves as the base camp for Amarnath Yatra ? For the adventurer in you, there are options for trekking and river rafting in Pahalgam.
Sonmarg (meadow of Gold, not literally)
It is a narrow, grassy land, dotted with alpine flowers and surrounded by great peaks . One of the things that should be experienced here is the horseback ride to the Thajivas glacier. It is an hour long but the scenery gets prettier by the glacier.
Shikara and House Boat experience
Kashmir experience is incomplete without a Shikara ride on Dal lake and a houseboat experience. Dal Lake is set against a backdrop of the Himalayas. Very tall trees make a sort of boundary for the lake. The Shikara ride is very relaxing and you can just focus on soaking in the beauty of the place. You can also evaluate an overnight stay in one of the houseboats to get a taste of the region. Sunset by the lake is a very romantic way to end the day.
Kashmiri cuisine
You can call it heavenly food ! from Yakhni Pulao to Rogan Josh to Lyodur Tshaman. If you are a foodie, I would suggest trying Wazwan (multi course meal). Finally sip your Kahwa, tea blended with saffron, spices and walnuts and savour Kashmir, the paradise on earth !
Doesn’t all this sound romantic? Whether you are planning for your honeymoon, or second honeymoon, or travelling with your partner, Kashmir should be in your list.
