Hiking Trolltunga : Everything you need to know

Trolltunga! Doesn’t the name have an excitement to it? It better – it means the Troll’s Tongue. Trolls are these magical creatures who are said to inhabit the region – mythical creatures who are either naughty or evil and to be feared…

Like the name would suggest, Trolltunga is a daunting adventure, not for the faint-hearted. It is situated at an elevation of about 1200 meters above sea level.

Trolltunga, located in Skjeggeddal, is a 23-27 km long trek with an ascent of about 900 meters. The unique rock formation here hangs at a height of 700 meters above the Ringedalsvatnet in Skjeggedal, which is at a height of 1100 meters above sea level.

The hike to the Trolltunga is ONLY POSSIBLE in the SUMMER, without a guide – but is still dependent on the weather conditions and other factors. During the winters the trek is possible with a guide, but it is best to avoid, as it can get dangerous.

The hike starts from the right side of funicular Magelibanen, the trail is clearly marked with red-letter T in the terrain and there are also signs along the route to help in the trek. The hike will take you about 8-12 hours including the return to the parking lot in Skjeggedal. Along the way, in Tyssebotn you’ll find marmites, which are deep holes in the mountain made by sand and stone rotating into the Tyssestrengene waterfalls. These falls are now on a dry spell (it was once the world’s fifth tallest waterfall before a power station was built here). The hike ends when you get to the Trolltunga which is the trip highlight!

This is where you will truly be tongue-tied… All drama in typical nature-style – the fjord landscape, the Folgefonna glacier, the winds and the feeling like you are a bird gliding over the water and the sky… Ok, that requires a bit of imagination… 😉

But seriously, it’s a view that’s quite something – nature’s way of giving you a Cliffhanger, I guess 😉

Remember to close your mouth when you get there – you’ll look better in the selfies that way…
