Uzbekistan is a country in the South- central region of Asia. It is one of the two doubly landlocked country that is bordered by five other landlocked countries and has a link to the ancient Silk route between China and the Mediterranean. Uzbekistan is known for its mosques and ancient Islamic architecture.
Uzbekistan is a land rich in history, diversity of geography and high on a natural beauty of the desolate kind. The manmade beauty is awe-inspiring – ancient cities that date back to 2500 years, trading outposts, mosques, mausoleums and Madrassas. Being in the middle of the Silk route, the country had great strategic importance for trade and hence saw a lot of war and conquests. One of its most famous cities, Samarkand, a major city on the Silk Route, was conquered by Alexander the Great. When the Arabs came in, they introduced Islam in the 8th-9th century.
The most famous leader to come from Uzbekistan is Tamerlane who was born in Samarkand. His line is the line of the Mughals who changed the course of India’s history… We went into this country with this history in mind and while moving around, realised that there was more…

Best places to visit in Uzbekistan
Tashkent – It is the largest city in Uzbekistan. It is also the capital city.
Ferghana – An important industrial city known for the Ferghana valley.
Andijan – Andijan is the fourth largest city in Uzbekistan. It is located in the heart of the Ferghana Valley.
Bukhara – Bukhara is a 2500 years old historical centre. It is also the capital of the Silk Road. It is filled with significant examples of monumental, medieval, Islamic and Central Asian architecture.

Namangan – Namangan is the third largest city in Uzbekistan. It is situated at the northern edge of the Ferghana Valley.
Samarkand – Samarkand is the second largest city in the nation. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site by itself. It is also home to the most famous Silk Road attraction, the Registan.
Shakhrisabz – Shakhrisabz is a small city. The historical centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its impressive monuments from the Timurid Dynasty.
Termez – Termez is the southernmost city near the border of Afghanistan. It was named by Alexander the Great. The city gets its name from the word thermos meaning hot, due to the intense temperature found here.

Things to do in Uzbekistan
- Visit Samarkand that was once the pride of the Silk Road… And in a way, it still is.
- Bukhara is as pretty as Samarkand and is an ancient city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site as well and offers a wealth of beautiful mosques, madrassahs, and palaces.
- Khiva, perhaps the most fascinating place in Uzbekistan, is hidden deep down in the desert and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Elliq-Qala – The lost desert fortresses of the Khwarezem. They are now just decaying adobe bricks hinting at the proud nation with large city fortresses guarding the land. The name Elliq-Qala means 50 forts, even though only about 20 have been found so far.
- Lake Aral was once the biggest freshwater lake in the world. But the blooming cotton industry in Uzbekistan and other farming operations in the area drained the former grand lake to a shadow of what it once was… And now, where there was a shore, only desert remains. Quite the sight to behold.
- Ugam-Chatkal, Uzbekistan’s largest National Park, is a place to get up close with the beauty of nature. The place, being a high mountain valley, is all green… A must-do here is to sleep in a traditional yurt (tent)!

I had the opportunity of going to both these type of holidays with Beyonder Travels.
