Itinerary in brief
Day 1: Baku – Arrival
Arrive in the capital city of Azerbaijan – Baku. Have the day at leisure and in the evening take a leisurely stroll through the Fountain Square and the Baku Boulevard. Overnight in Baku.
Day 2: Baku Sightseeing, the Fire Temple at Ateshgah and the Burning Mountain
Embark on a sightseeing trip of Baku including the Maiden tower, mosques and palaces, the old fort i.e. Icheri Sheher. Later, visit the ‘flagship’ sight: the Fire Temple of Ateshgah. Originally, a place of worship of the Zoroastrians (millennia ago), today the fortified temple that you see was built by 18th Century Indian Shiva devotees. Then proceed to watch the spectacle of the burning mountain at Yanardag. Overnight in Baku.
Day 3: Gobustan, Baku
Start the day with a visit to Gobustan – the home to the ancient rock drawings the Petroglyphs – dating back nearly 12,000 years. Return to Baku and visit the Bibi Heybet mosque and the fascinating Museum of Carpets. Take a pleasant walk along the Baku Boulevard in the evening. Overnight in Baku.
Day 4: Gabala
Proceed towards Gabala, the ancient capital of Caucasian Albania. En-route stop by the Diri Baba Mausoleum and the Shamakhi mosque. Near Gabala, make a brief visit to the waterfall Yeddi Gozel (Seven beauties) and the picturesque lake of Nohur Gol. overnight in Gabala.
Day 5: Sheki – Palaces, mosques and churches
Proceed towards Sheki, the capital of the Sheki Khanate. Visit the Churkur excavations – which show the occupation of Gabala from 4th / 3rd Century BC. En-route stop by the small Udin church; Udi is a small community, once prominent in the Caucasus, but now restricted to this region and a few other pockets. At Sheki, visit the colourful palace(s) of Sheki Khan with beautiful wall paintings and the coloured stained glass windows. End the day with a visit to the Albanian church (now an informative museum) in Kish. Overnight in Sheki.
Day 6: Sheki, Baku
Attend a Shabaka (Art of making stained glasses) workshop, visit a famous sweet shop and then proceed to Baku. En route, visit the Mausoleum of seven domes – the burial place of the Shirvanshah dynasty. Overnight in Baku.
Day 7 - Departure
Bid Adieu to the Caucasus and transfer to the airport for your flight home.
