Iceland – A chill place to be

Iceland inspiration for me and Led Zeppelin

My first tryst with Iceland was with the band Led Zeppelin. Their association with the title “Hammer of the Gods” came after their tour of Iceland and performance in Reykjavik. In fact, Iceland was the inspiration for one my favorite Led Zepp songs – the Immigrant Song. Remember?

The lyrics appealed to me quite a bit as did the music… Take a look – isn’t it stunning?

The Immigrant Song

“We come from the land of the ice and snow

From the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow.

The hammer of the gods, we’ll drive our ships to new lands.

To fight the horde, and sing and cry, Valhalla, I am coming!

On we sweep with threshing oar, our only goal will be the western shore.

How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore.

Of how we calmed the tides of war, we are your overlords.

On we sweep with threshing oar, our only goal will be the western shore.

So now you’d better stop and rebuild all your ruins.

For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.”

The Imagery of Valhalla

Sheer energy, Plant’s howling vocals, war, fire and ice, Valhalla… All that Viking imagery and the energy appealed hugely to my young mind… Honestly, it still does… 😉. And this was inspired by the country of Iceland they said! The land of Ice and Snow. Of contradictions of striking proportions co-existing… In beauty.

So that’s how I came to be intrigued by Iceland. And finally went there a few times… It didn’t disappoint – ever.

Iceland – The Land of Fire and Ice

Iceland is way up North. Close to the Arctic Circle. But it’s not all ice! Greenland is all ice. The locals here say that the names of Iceland and Greenland should have been reversed given the topography of the land!

This is nature’s playground. Varied attributes of Nature. Volcanoes and glaciers. Waterfalls and lava fields. Hot springs and Mineral-rich waters. Icelandic horses and Tomatoes. History, a bloodthirsty one at that. And culture! What else do you need?

It’s the land of Fire and Ice for a reason. Its where contrasts co-exist in beauty! Imagine volcanoes and glaciers living cheek-by-jowl. Or pristine nature and a history of bloodshed. The white of the icy land and the colors of the Northern Lights. This is psychedelic nature at its mischievous best. A surprise at every turn.

Here are some of my best experiences of Iceland. Take a look and maybe experience a few of them… It’ll be fun.
