The Pillar of Shame, Zadar, Croatia
The Pillar of Shame, Zadar, Croatia
Standing tall in a Croatian Square. Looking much the worse for wear since it has been standing for many centuries in the open…
But let your imagination run and you will be awed by the history and violence that this post would have witnessed. Once upon a time, hundreds of years ago, this would have been one of the most frightening sights for the guilty-at-heart.
Why the Pillar of Shame?
Then, it was a place where accused/ guilty were chained to be mocked, humiliated and whipped. Most times, the whole city would stop by to witness this spectacle. That is why this was called the Pillar of Shame. It seems to blend well with the rest of the Square, with its ancient Roman architecture…
Does this remind you of the Game of Thrones? The episode where Cersei is made to go through the Walk of Shame? I guess the inspiration for that may have been the cultural norms then in this region. This Square by the way, was once the center of Roman life in Zadar. It still seems like it…
What to do at the Pillar of Shame
This is a place to stop and spend time, imagining up the scenes from centuries past… its not one to be visited in a whistle-stop fashion. This is a place that is overshadowed by the more famous sights that Zadar is famous for – the fabulous sunset made famous by Hitchcock and the stunning Sea Organ. They are indeed must-visits. But try and squeeze in some time here at the Pillar of Shame. Sit back, relax, and just imagine… I had fun just kicking back and relaxing here. Try it.
