Mongolia

Why visit Mongolia?

mongolia map

Located between Russia and China is the landlocked country of Mongolia, a vast and remote land where nomadic life is still a living tradition. The country’s vast and majestic emptiness gives it an enduring appeal. This draws the attention of travellers, bringing them closer to its nature and nomadic inhabitants. Ulaan Baatar is the capital and largest city and is home to about 45% of the country’s population!

The area of what is now Mongolia has a very ancient and interesting past – it been ruled by various nomadic empires, the most famous of them being the Mongol empire. Yes. This is the land of the famous Genghis Khan! His grandson, the equally famous Kublai Khan conquered China to establish the Yuan dynasty. Amidst this grandeur and blood-thirsty expansionist wars, Tibetan Buddhism began to spread here – in the early 1900s, almost one-third of the adult male population were Buddhist monks!

Mongolia is the 19th largest and one of the most sparsely populated independent countries in the world – the land comprises of vast tracts of the grassy steppe, mountains and the Gobi Desert…
