This sacred city was the first capital of Sri Lanka, and it flourished for 1300 years. It used to be the centre of Theravada Buddhism for many centuries. Visit the Sri Maha Bodhi tree (249 BC), which is said to be the right-wing branch from the historical Sri Maha Bodhi at BodhaGaya in India, under which Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment. Sigiriya – is home to the 5th Century “Fortress in the Sky” which is perhaps the most fantastic wonder of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that used to stand at the entrance of the fortress. Also visit the Cave Temple in Dambulla before proceeding to Kandy for an overnight stay.
