Climb the Grábrók volcano crater. Visit a natural history museum in a small fishing village and stroll around the harbour. Town, gardens, fjords, waterfalls & lava

Explore the charming town of Akureyri for its botanical garden, old world charm and panoramic view over Eyjafjörður fjord. Then on to the Goðafoss, the waterfall of the Gods and Lake Mývatn which is known for its geological wonders and active summer bird life. Then walk around the strange lava formations at Kálfaströnd. End the day with a relaxing soak in the waters that are a unique blend of minerals, silicates, and geothermal micro-organisms at Mývatn Nature Baths. Overnight in Mývatn.

Day 4:
Lava labyrinths and hot springs

Hike in the lava labyrinth at the “dark castles” of Dimmuborgir, hoping to get a glimpse of the trolls who are said to live there. Visit the hot spring area of Námaskarð with bubbling mud pools and steaming solfataras. Drive through the highlands and moon-scapes where you may spot an Arctic fox or reindeer. From June to August we can take a detour to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall in the Vatnajökull National Park. Overnight in Borgarfjörður-Eystri.

Fjords, glaciers & ice

Take in the fjord landscape as we drive through winding roads with its tiny fishing villages. Spend time exploring the region and its black sandy beach, where often large icebergs get stranded – you may even spot seals swimming in the Arctic waters. Overnight in Höfn.

Day 6:
Lava fields, beaches & waterfalls

Head across the Eldhraun lava field, cross the sandy desert overlooked by rugged cliffs, glaciers and waterfalls to reach the famous Reynisfjara shore – the most impressive black sand and pebble beach in Iceland. Look out for the massive Skógafoss waterfall before heading to the Eyjafjallajökull Information Center.
