The heart of India beats to the tune of religion – now and for centuries. It is home to some of the holiest shrines of the country, both ancient and modern. Two of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas are in this region.
The Beyonder journey to the religious heart of Madhya Pradesh starts for the modern town of Indore with its malls and trappings of modernity. It then heads to Ujjain with its many ruined ancient temples on the banks of the sacred river Shipra, the most famous being the Mahakaleshwar temple that houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The sacred island of Omkareshwar shaped like the Hindu symbol of ‘Om’ has been witness to hundreds of generations of pilgrims who gather at this confluence of the rivers Narmada and Kaveri to pray at the second Jyotirlinga in this region. Maheshwar with its mighty fort and ancient temples is also famous for being the home of the renowned Maheshwari sarees. Mandu is an architectural wonder with the palaces and mosques standing testimony to an ancient love story of a poet-prince and his consort.
